Distribution and habitat

Rio Itaya / Rio Nanay-drainage, Loreto-district, Peru.

I collected this fish in the wild in October, 2005 (in the end of the dry season).
The photos from the habitat ;
Muddy, shallow water, no watermovement, mud upon fine sand on the bottom, and a lot of dead leaves.
pH: 5,26, Conductivity: 11 microSiemens/cm  T: 26,2 °C

And I collected it again in October, 2007.
The photos from the habitat ; Clear blackwater,
no watermovement, fine sand on the bottom, and a lot of dead leaves.
pH: 4,70  Conductivity: 63 microSiemens/cm  T: 31,6 °C

Other fishes in the same water: Sailfin tetra and Pyrrhulina sp.

I collected this fish again in October, 2010 (in the end of the dry season), in Rio Pintoyacu, a northern tributary to Rio Nanay.
The photos from the habitat ; Clear, shallow blackwater,
no watermovement, mud upon fine sand on the bottom, and a lot of dead leaves. Surrounding trees gave shadow almost all the day.
pH: 5,14, Conductivity: 86 microSiemens/cm  T: 28,3 °C

Water parameters

PH : 4,5-6,5
ppm : 5-100

My Experience

No problems keeping several males in the same tank.

Breeding

Behaves monogamous in my tanks.
The male has not been allowed to take part in the care for the fry here, could be a typical behavior for polygamous species.

Good results in soft water (70 ppm) and pH < 6.0.
50-60 fry.
