A brief report from the first collecting day in the Amazon Oct. 2009

Yesterday, first collecting day ......

We went out of Iquitos, followed the road (the only one in the area) to Nauta, and walked to this biotop:

Beneath the surface it looks like this:

pH: 5,06  Conductivity: 18 microSiemens/cm  Temperature: 27,2 °C

The first fish, caught with a hand net, was a female Apistogramma sp."Schwarzbrust":

With a bigger net, we also got males:

We went to the nest biotop; a restwater pool where the locals had cut down the surrounding vegetation:

pH: 5,32  Conductivity: 10 microSiemens/cm  Temperature: 30,2 °C

We got some nice Apistogramma sp. "Masken": This is males:

and a female:

Then another biotop, just about 20 km from the city of Iquitos:

Blackwater!

Remember, this is the end of the dry season, not much water left:

The ground is fine, white sand with lots of leaf litter

Beneath the surface:

pH: 3,80 (!)  Conductivity: 59 microSiemens/cm  Temperature: 29,1 °C

In the left bottom corner, there is an Apistogramma!

Beautiful Apistogramma atahualpa:

We also got lots of beautiful Pyrrhulina (cf.) spilota in the net:

and some Rivulus sp. in this water :

Today we are preparing for the next expedition; tomorrow we will go to Mazan and up the Rio Napo.

Maybe more to come......
